Regular Season 2017-18
The Curious Success of Kyrie Irving11/10/2017 Over the summer, Kyrie Irving formally requested a departure from LeBron James and the Cavaliers, which of course was also asking to be able to lead his own team. After agonizing days and weeks of waiting, fans finally learned that he would be sent to the Boston Celtics, giving him a chance to play in a one-two punch with star forward Gordon Hayward. Going into the season, everything looked great; neither of the stars could likely lead a team alone, but together, as a duo, they could stir up the East significantly.
Then opening night came. Six minutes into the Celtics' opening night came versus the Cavaliers, Gordon Hayward went down with a season-ending injury -- leaving Kyrie Irving to lead the team, all by himself. After losing opening night, and one more game without a healthy Hayward, Irving and the Celtics turned something around. Winning games and taking names, as a unit they have won 10 straight games since the Hayward incident; ranking the team first in the Eastern Conference with a 10-2 record, while three-time Final appearance Cleveland starring none-other-than LeBron James, have a 5-7 record. The best part? That's not even all -- they have the best record in the entire NBA, where the next-best teams, Golden State and Houston, only have a 9-3 record. Where this very random burst of success is coming from is not exactly known, with Boston unloading many of their stars to pick up Kyrie Irving anf Gordon Hayward, one of which is down, and veteran big-man Al Horford out, could Kyrie really be leading this charge all by himself? Only time will tell, but it sure does look like it, for now.
